There is mo way for a MPPT controller to "drop out" of bucking because there is no secondary straight PWM controller built in to do it with. Everything comes through the buck converter.
The Eco-w has a built in sensor that keeps it from cooking itself. The only time I saw it work was when I let it sit in the sun and the case got hot to the touch. I know if it gets too hot it will shut down and display a over heat message but all mine did was clip the amps until I shaded it. Then it went back to normal operation. Other than that I have had them get warm while pushing 17 and 18a long term but they never never backed off the same peak they pushed when cool.
Even after three years I still see people wanting to say that somehow the Eco-w is faulty. It can push the same current/watts from the 250w polys as the MS-MPPT-60 does and did so for four hours while running the little A/C.(twice) I can tell you this, I have never had a Eco-w get stuck in float or become confused after a panel crashed like the big controller does.
