Both measurements are valid IMHO.
Current times seconds gives charge in coulombs which is what the battery really needs.
The change in battery voltage times the change in coulombs gives the change in the battery's energy in joules so energy can be calculated easily.
However, a watt-hour meter will give power in joules too if you multiply the watt-hours by the conversion factor of 3600s/1Hr.
So its kind of a wash as to which is better.
