It's because MPPT works on watts not on amps. :) I'll be interested in seeing how you get this to work on your terms. I've done similar things before so I expect you'll get this sorted out.
Example: A 12V battery gets charged at the same rate using a 100A (12V) charger as a 24V battery with a 50A (24V) charger. If we went by amps only counts as a rule, 24V batteries would need a 100A charger same as a 12V battery. Yet, they don't. MEX is right, it's all about watts.
