I had a winter in Idaho, all expenses paid thanks to the USN. And it got to -42 one night, it froze the battery in my car and stuck my room-mates Bronco's tires to the dirt driveway. We had to chip the tires free and then we drove away with lumps of dirt-ice stuck to a couple wheels until it broke up. It was so cold in the kitchen that my roomies words froze coming out of his mouth and I had to thaw them out in the frying pan to hear what he had to say.....heh.
I've spoken to people who lived in Arco, which is where we were, since then and they never had weather like that. But this was the '70s and Time magazine had a cover story predicting a global freeze and ice age ahead.
