Those other efficiency claim a 220v toaster is more efficient (I squared is in the denominator so less I more eff!)! Ain't got 220v and the cost to get it does a mess with efficiency based of $$$$, ie having more efficient toaster costs more to make toast, inefficient use of $$$$

A simple explanation of power factor is right there for anyone who bothers to read that Xantrex PF White Paper linked to earlier ... but simply put, the closer voltage is in phase with current the closer power factor will be to an ideal 1, at which point voltage and current would be perfectly in phase. Resistive circuits can be awfully close but PF ratings for inductive circuits can be shockingly awful. As mentioned in that article it's not unusual for a converter to have a PF of .7 so when it comes to powering a converter with a genset it's not "watts" but VA that's critical in determining whether the genset in question is suitable for the task at hand.
