VA applies to the input watts, not to the output watts. Converter efficiency is about 85%, so that 864 output means 1016w input. Now apply the 0.7 PF and get 1452 VA required.
Absolutely correct, but I thought I'd try to keep my example as simple as possible as there's already confusion over "PF" vs "efficiency". My point was to illustrate why a given genset may appear to be suitable based on it's "watts" rating alone when in fact that can often not be the case at all.
Except when it turned out my Vector charger showed 0.76 PF when powered by the non-inverter type generator, but 0.66 when powered by the inverter-generator. Confusion? What confusion?
There does seem to be some consistency within the inverter-gen results I have, so I think we can match charger to gen with VA if we stick within the same type of generator. Maybe.
I also suspect the Kill-A-Watt itself on the non-inverter gen where it gets into that RMS funny business. That gen is not MSW, but it does not have as "clean" an output AFAIK, which might affect the KAW somehow. Way over my head. :(
