SOLVED - Onan 5500 Gold Gen - Fuel Issues - FUEL PUMP

Have an Onan Gold 5500 Generator and I installed an inline (clear) fuel filter to see if fuel is going through. A little history. In the past, when I would press the prime button, you could hear the fuel pump prime the generator. It was almost loud. Now, that is no more. I used a test light and checked the 12v to it and it is getting it.

So what happens now is that I will start the gen and it runs for about 5 minutes or so and then stops (runs as should). I check the clear fuel filter and it is pretty much bone dry. If I check it again in an hour (without touching anything), it is filled where it should be. The gen will start and then stop after 5 minutes.

I am thinking the fuel pump (8 years old) or maybe the per-filter (attached to fuel pump is actually clogged). Anyone have to replace their fuel pump/filter? As stated, the priming used to be very aggressive and loud. Now, it does not do anything.

Thanks,

Brendan

  • Might sound stupid but fuel filter have a directional flow, if installed reverse direction you'll get very little to no fuel flow which could account for the filter running dry and then refilling over time.
