I think I'd want a little more data as to actual engine temperature.
I simply do not trust the OEM coolant temp gauge very much.
Perhaps the fan clutch is responding appropriately and the gauge itself acts more like today's dummy gauges that are more meant to pacify the OCD, quick to complain driver, and reduce dealer visits.
When my 1989 temp gauge last started acting different, I attached the thermocouple from my Digital multimeter to the T stat housing and radiator so I could see if it was lying, or not.
It was not. The radiator cap was not allowing the system to draw in coolant from overflow tank when cooling.
