A clutch fan that engages at too low a temperature with a sumultaneous failure of a dash gauge suddenly reading too low is a bit hard to swallow. This thing needs diagnosis - not a politically liberal "shovel money at it" fix.
Shoot the cylinder head, thermostat housing and water pump suction side of the radiator. No guesswork. Definitive troubleshooting and accurate fix.
If you lust to spend money do it intelligently and get the cooling system pressure tested on the way home from Harbor Freight were you bought your new Infrared Thermometer Gun. After the system gets fully warmed up paint the gun across the full extent of your radiator core. Cooler spots mean a radiator job is in your near future. Then check your tire heat then the calibration on your rig's thermostat. Shhot the DWs forehead and see if she is ready for a Martini.
Oh she's ready, alright. A lemon drop martini, to be precise.
And thanks to you I might have to pour myself a double bourbon before I can get to hers.
We have a thing. Years ago I explained to her the emergency oxygen mask phenomenon. See when the plane loses cabin pressure, they tell you to put your own mask on before you mask your children. Well when I come home from another hard day at the office, I must put on my own before I can tend to hers... lest with BOTH perish.
And yeah... it's a HF unit. I know you're proud. Though I bought it online and not at the store in the next town over.
Of course it's not new, but 8 years is far from old either. Old from YOUR perspective requires a general understanding of String Theory and a pre-Gregorian calendar. Perhaps Aztec? Or Mayan???
When God said, "Let there be light," you flipped the switch!
To be clear... the gauge doesn't appear to be acting abnormally. I would say that the fan engages at just a little lower temp than usual, but it remains on long after the gauge drops below standard running temps.
I'm not into wasting money. If it's not likely the clutch, then I'd rather get to the diagnosis rather than mask the symptoms.
