Something else to worry about with generators

We went Kansas about two months ago in a lady's horse trailer with a older onan gen. It does have a fuel pump not gravity feed. We ran the gen all the way up and back the roads were really rough. Lot of bumps up and down .
The lady said her gen was running bad now so I looked at it when I opened the oil fill gas just ran everywhere. What I'm thinking is all that bouncing up and down that was doing the same thing to the float in the carb so it was filling the cylinders with gas. I still need to check the float for a hole in it and the float needle.
I do know this will happen with a gravity feed if you don't cut the gas off but I never thought about it while it was running.

  • From my experience, the most gas into crankcase contamination takes place when the engine is stopped. This can be from a stuck float, badly designed carburetor, pressure within the lines and tank, or an uncompleted start cycle like when the engine floods and gas seeps past the rings into the crankcase. A peculiar situation with a crankcase breather and location of the tubing into the air filter might also cause gas in the crankcase. In a multicylinder engine, no firing in one cylinder could cause the above but a user can usually diagnose a cylinder not firing.
  • Personally I wouldn't ride in a horse trailer :).

Yes I know what you are saying about a smoother ride. The gen on the horse trailer is right at the back and no shocks. I tell you I 35 was bad all the way up or maybe it was just her truck and trailer.
