Splicing AWG 6 to AWG 12?

I figured out that by running AWG 6 right from the panel, instead of existing AWG 12, the power losses will be cut in half. Only don't know what is the best way to splice #12 to #6 without junction box and buses. One solution is to use insulated Set Screw Butt Joint, see mcmastercarr.com item 7957K1:

This thing looks weird. Like a shrink tube only not tight. I will have to caulk it around the cable ends, and then won't be able to open it, to re-check and tighten the screw. Did anybody use it, and are there other splices to try? Maybe fold the end of #12 in half and use #6-#6 butt splice?
