Spluttering Hot Water Furnace

Yes, the title says it all ! Have not used the trailer in a while. It was a bit "funny" with the pilot, almost if the spring had weakened, but it started OK finally. But when alight, the main flame seems to come and go a bit and occasionally "splutters".

How blue should be the flame ? I find by adjusting the air mixture sleeve, I can make the flame orange to blue or in between.

It's going, but I'm a bit concerned about it. Wind is not very high.
Any suggestions as to what could be the problem ? Or do they usually act like this ?

Thanks.

  • Sputtering can also indicate oil (a contaminant) in the propane lines or regulator.

If the above tests appear OK, with propane off at the tank, disconnect propane line and see if there is any oil in the line. If so, disconnect both ends and blow out with compressed air. Reconnect and bleed out air.
  • Flame should be Blue with just a tinge of yellow at tip

Turn on stove top burners (ALL on high).
Check how they burn........do they sputter?

With stove top burners ON..check water heater flame.

Then turn on furnace and check stove top burners and water heater flames.

IF they diminish is size, go out, change drastically then LP regulator can't keep up.

    No wasps, no spiders.

How blue ? Just blue by moving the air intake just a little way so the flame is just a bit away from orange, or moving the air intake sleeve quite a bit so the flame is really blue and far away from orange ?

Would inferior Propane cause spluttering ?

How does a regulator show it's not working properly or needs to be replaced ?

    Thanks
  • If it hasn't been used you might check for wasp nests in the chamber. Spiders also.
