There are only 2 ways to get the oil out, through the plug in the pan or with one of the devices that sucks it out via the dipstick tube. The oil pan plug in my 2008 model is fairly small in diameter, enough to easily close off the hole with a finger tip. If you use a catch pan and pull the plug with the engine cold and don't do something unfortunate like drop the plug and have it roll away, I think the job can be done making a reasonably small mess. On further thinking I guess a 3rd way would be to remove the oil filter cap for access there. I don't know what the mess factor would be doing that.
