Storage compartment combo locks

Anyone running these and how do you like? Locks

I saw these recently on a used 5er for sale and thought they looked like a good idea. Hate having to find keys ever time I want to open a locked storage compartment and I know the factory keyed locks are pretty easy to crack.

  • They would be handy when you didn't have the key on your person, but in reality they are no more secure than the factory locks. Of course if someone of a nefarious nature sees these locks he may consider there is something inside of value. :) And he could probably get in quicker with a medium sized screwdriver than you can without one. :)
  • I had them on my TT and wouldn't do it again. They are a convenience only with no added security. In fact I think they would be easier to defeat than the standard key lock. Despite the taper, it would be easy to grab them with channel locks and twist them right out of the door.
  • I see the benefit of not having to locate a key, now you just have to remember the combination. Just don't make the mistake of thinking the compartment is any more secure. Baggage doors can all be easily pried open in seconds with a screwdriver.
  • I looked at those when I changed all my locks to a different key. I couldn't use it on a front mounted tool box because there was no way to see the numbers behind the propane bottles. On the rear, again when in my barn I couldn't see the numbers when backed up to the wall but it is easy to reach back there with a key.
  • I have had these on all of the compartment doors on my 5th wheel for about three years now. No problems at all. I have never had to lube them. If you do lube them I would think a dry lubricant would be best.

  • Subscribed, I was looking at them also. I even asked a couple people in last couple years how they liked theirs. And not very many people have them that I've found.

One said his hang up because of dust getting in and caking up and the other guy liked his. I don't know if the guy that didn't like his maybe put in wrong grease or lube or maybe they aren't supposed to be lubed at all?

And while these would help with the key situation they would not be any more theft proof, a twist of a screw driver. That is if theft didn't bring his own key IMO.
