If it has been in for a while it may be rusted and hard to remove. When I replaced mine I had to used long needle nose pliers and twist if back and forth about 1/ 8 in at a time. I also had to make some tooling to pry up on the bottom of the element while twisting. Mine was in there for 14 years when I changed it so maybe yours will come out better. Before I installed the new one I cleaned out the hole with emery paper and steel wool. Good luck.
