Nothing happens. You set the voltage for 14.4V, the battery charges up, and not much else happens if there's 14.4V sitting on it and the battery is fully charged... the current taken drops off to 0. I see it every time on my RC watt meter when I top charge upon return home from a trip, with my 30 amp MegaWatt PSU. It might take about 2.5 to 3 hours to top off the last 3-4 amps of recharging.
Some of the panel's output during the day is used to run the parasitic 24 hours a day usage that the smoke alarm, refrigerator, water pumps and what ever else use 24/7 when camping. If there is nothing drawing current, the panel doesn't produce the current.
