Suburban Furnace did't start

A Suburban SF35Q RV furnace.

Worked fine a week ago. Then started sputtering while running.

Finally wouldn't start at all. You could hear the flame catch briefly and feel the heat in the exhaust, then it would go out. This happened 3-5x before it stopped trying.

As there was no 120V at our Great Smoky Mountains N.P. campground, I opened a window and turned on the stove for heat for a few hours in the mornings and evenings. The tanks were full, I switched from one to the other just to be sure.

Finally got a mobile RV tech to fix it down here in Florida.

Diagnosis? Curious what people here would think.

My initial thought was a plugged burner.
Or maybe an electronic control issue.

But no, it was the regulator.

The flame of the stove burners was a bit lower and more yellow than usual, but it didn't click to me that this could also be the furnace problem.

  • Mine was doing the same sputtering, will be workamping this winter so had Ferrel Gas hook me up to a 250 gal tank hooked to there regulator. What a difference this made furnace is now running strong.

Will install a new regulator in the spring before I leave this job.I also thought the circuit board or something else was going bad, never gave any thought on the regulator is going bad.Stovetop, oven and hot water heater were still working.

The frig and hot water heater were working fine, as was the stove top except for that slightly smaller, yellower flame.

My guess is that the furnace, being a bigger 35K BTU unit, needs more propane than everything else and so is more sensitive to a weak regulator.

The tech replaced the regulator with something that looks simpler and more industrial strength so maybe this won't happen again.

I had an experience where there was an oil trap in the propane line to the furnace that would act up in colder outside air temperatures but not when warm. Changed with viscosity.

  • Yeah, that would be a tricky one to resolve. I would have thought controller board for sure. I'll have to store this one away in the old memory bank.

Regulator where, on the propane tanks, or on the Suburban heater?

On the propane tanks. That's why the stovetop burners were a bit weak with a yellower flame than normal.

Just wish that had clicked for me. I might have tried replacing the regulator myself. Oh well, you pay to learn.

That would be at the tank. All regulation is done there.
