Some have cold inlet
Some have hot outlet

If you have a single valve water heater by-pass on your water heater, then yes, you do have a check valve on the hot out side.
If you have a 2 valve water heater by-pass, you might have a check valve on the hot out side.
If you have a 3 valve water heater by-pass, you probably do not have any check valves.
