Suburban SW6-D water heater keeps clicking

I have a Suburban SW6-D water heater. When I turn the switch on, the igniter clicks, lights the water heater, flame appears, igniter continues to click, flame shuts off after about 5 seconds. Does this over and over.
I've cleaned the igniter rods. Fiddled with the positioning of the igniter. no change.

  • I doubt propane delivery has anything to do w/ the problem.

When you turn on the switch, the control board sends timed power to the gas valve, and also sends power to the spark electrode at the same time, and the burner lights up.
In a few seconds the flame sensor (same as spark electrode) tells the control board to supply continuous power to the gas valve, and also to shut off power to the igniter. So if the gas valve is shutting down, and the spark keeps sparking, 3 guesses as to what the problem mite be :)
  • Mine just did that too. It was the edge connector to the circuit board was dirty. Removed the connector, wiped the contacts, plugged it back in a all works now. This happened to me before when water got in there after a rain.
  • Update: I went inside the camper, lit the stove. Both burners. Let it stay on for about 1 minute. Turned stove off. Then tried the water heater again, it click-click-click, lit the burner, click-click, but stayed lit this time, then 1 click, and continued to stay lit, then no more clicking, burner lit and is heating the water now. seems to be working normal again.

    ? strange??
Glad it is working, but I remain confused.
  • usual order of failure
    1. Bad Spark electrode
    2. Spark plug wire shorted
    3. Bad Ignition module
