Suburban SW6-DE

So my trailer had an issue with the water heater not staying lit with the door installed. Ran great without it but choked out with in on. it would try to re light and did as soon as the door was cracked open. I diagnosed it as a lean burn with the door on. Did all the standard stuff blow out the burner tube check the orifice ect. ect. I figured there should be a way to adjust the gas flow but the suburban manual simply says to take it to a qualified technician. Well I happen to know a thing or two so i poked around and above the gas valve is what looks to be a gas regulator and in the middle of that is a brass screw. So hey why not. i unscrewed it and underneath was the adjuster screw. turned it 1/8 turn clockwise and Viola it burns blue and hot with the door on. So do not pay some over priced RV scab 135 bucks an hour give it a shot if you are having issues with lean or rich mixture its simple and so easy a caveman can do it !

  • You do NOT adjust a 2 stage or single stage 12 volt Gas valve. They are not safely serviceable. A COMPETENT Service Tech and Shop KNOWS this. If you have 11.5 inches at the gas valve and too low pressure at the orifice, you replace the Gas Valve. YOU can do what you want with your gas valve. But any knowledgeable Technician and shop know the liability of messing with LP gas valves and would replace which is what is required. Hopefully, Your future epitaph will not say, "I should have had a scab look at it". To the moderator, why is this poster allowed to denigrate RV Technicians by calling them scabs and you do not edit his post? Doug

thanks ...what dealership do you work for ? and in case you think i don't know what 11" of water is i worked in a cal lab for 15 years ;) 11" of water is equal to .397 psi which is a trickle so as long as it not plugged and all other gas fired appliances work i think i am good there pal. that kind of response is something tech writers tell customers to scare them into paying some scab to do EXACTLY what i just did.

  • Might want to check propane pressure........check with at least 50% of propane appliances in service. Should be 11" WC at the WH gas valve (test port on valve)
