The hotter the windshield is when you apply the suction, the better it will lock on. I too use a thin coat of Vaseline to get the suction cup to really lock down.
Just a note, California now has some specific regulations about windshield mounted devices. Can only be a certain size obstruction and has to be mounted in a specific spot on the windshield. Perhaps California members can provide more info.
