That is good advice. I would hate to see someone break a tank. Those rubber couplings are cheap and durable.
I actually bought the rubber couplings and was going to install but there was only 2 short pipe nipples between the 3" Y fitting and the valves. Not enough room to cut the nipples and install couplings on either side of the Y. I found that using the methods I described, removing and reinstalling the valves was not that difficult and certainly will be easier the next time around. The tanks are only about 16" apart leaving just enough clearance for the Y, 2 valves and flanges.
