I have one of those “cheap” plug in modules and use the Dash Command app on my iPad.
I can check and reset codes as you would expect but also look at and monitor critical engine functions.
I guess it all depends on what you are trying to accomplish.
For a <$20 investment, I am happy with what I have.
You can buy “Pro” level apps, but your gunna pay for it.
