Your basic device protects against surges - as in high transient voltages or surges.
The more advanced units protect against over/under voltage, reverse polarity, open neutral, etc.
For years I did not have any protection. But in 2004 with a rig with expensive electronics I installed a PI HW50C. Dam* good thing I did as shortly after I encountered 160V on a 30A pedestal and the unit protected the rig until I could unplug. 160V lets the smoke out of electronics.
