Surge Guard protection... Worth it?

Yep no ? Ask.we hve a surage plus a auto former, so yes well worth it IMHO, now it all happy-camping or rving

Yes. One power surge or wrong wiring at a pedestal costs an average of $3,000 to repair the damage on an RV. Been there done that I know. :(

Yes, absolutely, positively and definitely worth it. As many will mention, you only need it to protect you once and you could save thousands of $$ in damage.

The Surge Guard 34730 has now been superceded by model 34830. CW is probably blowing out the 34730 to make room for the new one. The 34730 is currently over $200 at all the other online RV parts vendors. CW has the new 34830 priced at $280. The new 34830 has open ground protection but the old one doesn't.

Technically the PI EMS-PT30C has better and more features vs 34730. Perusing the specs between the two, some of the differences I note are:
1. cuts out at 104V as opposed to 102V (104 is better).
2. 60 Hz frequency protection (good for generator use). The 34730 doesn't have this feature. .
3. 44,000 peak surge current vs. 6500 amps.
4. accidental 240 volt protection vs. 34730 which does not have this feature. The 34730 is permanently damaged on 240 volt.
5. on reverse polarity, the PI shuts down but 34730 does not.
6. has surge indication while 34730 doesn't.

As mentioned, Progressive Industries units have a lifetime warranty which is a HUGE plus. Some have reported a short life span of the Surge Guard unit. PI is made in the US, but Surge Guard is made offshore. A hardwired EMS is preferable so it won't grow legs and walk away, or get damaged.

I forbid you to buy the Surge Guard 34730 and insist that you get the Progressive Industries EMS-PT30C! :B CW has the EMS-PT30C on sale for $299.99 incl. shipping but is $244.97 (free sh.) at dyersonline.com.

You can get the PI EMS-LCHW30 hardwired EMS at CW for $244.99 or $214.97 at dyersonline.com. The remote display is nice to have and you can currently get the EMS-HW30C for $233.45 at RVupgrades.com or from CW "on sale" for $284.99.

Jumping on the pro-list for the Progressive unit!

Not until you need it and then it's worth every penny. Problem is "DO YOU FEEL LUCKY" ... for me it's worth every penny not only in preventing costly damage, but the inconvenience of having to deal with damaged items in the middle of a road trip. I really like my PI unit with the remote readout since I have a continuous readout of voltage and amperage draw. I also have the hardwired unit so nothing to remember to plug in, store or worry about it growing legs.

I have the 50 amp version of that unit (Folks that is the "Full Version" with low/high voltage monitoring and so on, It has the LCD display)

Are they worth it? Well, in the last few months I've had several power flickers, Most of these were in Aug/Sept when it was hot and I was running the A/C. One of the hardest things on an A/C is a "Hot restart".. (Where you turn it off and right back on) the Surge guard held me dark for like 3 minutes, enough time for the A/C to return to "Cold Start" levels (normal starting).

Low voltage is also hard on teh A/C or the same reasons. And it protects against that (Though I have other protection there).

I think they are worth it.

Now: As for the brand CW sells,, Well the Progressive Industries HW-30c is a better unit, but more epensive in the initial purchase.

However the PI units are warranted... For Life.

PI 30 amp portable. Purchase price is cheaper than possible damage that can occur if you don't have one.
