It sounds like the same strategy when you buy a new cell phone - the phone can handle whatever data you throw at it, but you can choose a high data plan for more money or a low data plan for less. It's simply that we're not used to doing this type of thing with vehicles.
On the positive side, Tesla's increasing the battery during a time of need at no cost to the owner is something that you don't see in other companies. It should be congratulated for putting the customers' safety first. Hopefully they will continue like this.
