Owners cheated themselves by paying less money for the vehicle with lower range. Having excess capacity in the battery controlled by software allows more efficiency in assembly.
Excess capacity also allows the battery a longer life. As cells go bad, they can be replaced by the spare capacity, although I don't know if they do that.
