From speaking with a friend who now has 3 Tesla's, he just took delivery of an X, the entire battery is used, they just vary the duty cycle.
This, IMHO, just backs up the theory that lower workload equals less risk Tesla would have to spend $$$ on warranty on the 'cheaper' battery.
More risk = more money.
