Just be sure to examine the fine print when buying a filter. For drinking water, a 0.5 micron filter is the one I choose. A 0.5 micron filter will remove harmful bacteria. I adapted a whole house cartridge type housing with garden hose fittings and only buy the replaceable cartridges.
As mentioned if you want to lower TDS, you'll need to process the water even move.
For removing trash & rust from the incoming water, a cheap charcoal is the one I choose.
The specs on the Brita filters are hard to find - they really don't do much to clean the water but they do make it taste better. If that's all you want, go for it.
I'm not familiar with the specs on the Pur product and would be interested in seeing what they do - I'm not interested in seeing their advertising hype.
You can't go wrong buying drinking water that's been processed through an RO filter. I use reusable bottles and pay as little as $0.20 a gallon.
