Testing a converter?

So did you ever change out the reverse polarity fuses in the converter or not before starting this thread?

Don't know there was a reverse polarity fuses in the converter?

I better win millions to make up for this whole week.

It might not be bad at all. You have to check its voltage up where it is, not down by the battery which might have an "open" in the path between it and the converter.(EDIT!! Nope, your lights got brighter on battery when charger on, so the path is ok) Or you could have accidentally caused a reverse polarity for a moment while installing your new battery so the converter just needs a couple of fuses.

Or maybe the converter is not getting any 120v input even though you are plugged in. What's this about the AC also not working? (The plot thickens!)

Hooked up the battery charger, and still hooked to shore power and the lights are a lot brighter...like normal. I'm guessing converter is bad again. Maybe way the AC won't worth too.

It's a new battery this morning at 12.78v

If the 12.58v was measured when connected to the shore power, then your converter is not putting out. An old Parallax or Magnetek puts out about 13.8v. A modern converter such as a Progressive Dynamics puts out something between 13.2 and 14.4v depending on the battery's state of charge.

Yea...thanks... The converter is in the middle of the coach in a very small compartment I have the crawl into. Changed it out 4 years ago....PITA.

I am glint to try the charger hooked to the battery to make it throughout the night.

Do not test at the battery.

Test voltage at the converter's terminals or if can't get to them, use the battery lugs on the DC fuse panel near the converter.

You could have the battery disconnect switch or the battery fuse open and then you would see 12.x battery at the battery even if you could see 13.x at the converter or fuse panel.

So the converter is only tested bad if it is plugged in and you only see 12.x at the fuse panel, which means you are on battery with no converter (and it also means the path from the battery is not open anywhere)

Yes you can use a battery charger on the battery while connected. As long as the charger is putting more in than the rig things are taking out, the battery will gain in its recharge. So it is better to have a charger with some amps to it, and not use a trickle charger.

New battery? Possible oops there! Check the reverse polarity fuses on the converter if it turns out the converter is dead.
