It makes sense in a conservative mind set to save the amps but really, if you are that marginal that you have to worry about a few amps, you need more of something.
And we see that mindset all the time. It's often combined with the idea of 'efficiency.'
Well, I am finding this discussion useful because it alerts me that I maybe should spend the $$ I would spend on a small PSW on a battery or solar panel instead.
My MSW runs everything except my laptop. It used to not run the freezer, but bigger (=un-nicked) cables fixed that.

In my case the small inverter was already installed, and has no standby, its either off or on.
Wait, I thought when were were saying 'standby' we meant 'on but nothing drawing power'. Is that wrong?

My harbor freight MSW 1500watt uses quite a bit of juice if it's on standby all night. I've thought of getting a little, spiffier, one for that reason. I guess I should compare actual draw before I do.
If it has the remote on/off switch, just turn it off overnight from inside the rig. If you have to go outside in the dark and rain to turn it off and on, that's different. (Unless the standby draw is still trivial in the big picture)
Or do a bit more research and find a inverter which HAS a lower standby no load draw (they DO vary quite a bit)..
I suspect a little pricier inverter than a HF brand most likely will have a lower current draw due to better design.
Some inverters like the Trip-lite can be set to turn off when nothing calls for power.
Oooo... both very useful info, thank you guys.
