One thing Phil might do is forget and plug in shore power or gen while the inverter is still powering the receptacles. Yipes 240v!!
I might forget the older I get. I haven't used the approach but once ... I just keep the capability available in our rig as a Plan D backup.
Should I forget to unplug the inverter ... I doubt that 240 volts would result unless phasing was just perfect and remained perfect. Perhaps a blown inverter (most likely), or a tripped local breaker for the receptacle where the inverter was plugged in (next most likely), or a tripped main breaker (least likely).
What I try within our budget to do is use 12V DC appliances as much as possible to minimize precious battery capacity lost through inverter inefficiency. I'd even prefer a complete 12 volt system in an RV ... 12V air conditioner, 12V microwave, 12V propane refrigerator, 12V fuel cell, and last but not least - a 12V generator. They all exist for folks like Bill Gates.
