Someone is rattling off on things that will leave chemists rolling around on the floor clutching their sides in agony. Where is the towel for flowing tears?
Standard automotive AGM batteries contain less quantity of 1.300 specific gravity acid than telephone standby batteries. Telephone batteries are designed to last 12-15 years but offer specifically limited performance. Telephone batteries have thicker mats containing a greater quantity of H2SO4. The greater distance between plates is what causes higher impedance reflected in performance numbers.
BUT
What has been omitted from this board's discussion threads is the performance number in the 100 hour drawdown
The difference between a true cyclable battery has so many differences from a starting battery I am not going to even try to list them.
The point to fear from a damaged overheating overcharged battery in a confined space is H2S. Hydrogen Sulfide. The first thing is does is paralyze olfactory nerves almost instantly. No more rotten egg smell. H2S is poison to be respected.
Never forget that a badly boiling battery not only emits hydrogen, but two atoms of oxygen for every one of hydrogen. This is why batteries can explode. The evolution empties chambers and one spark is kah- blooey.
Other point. AGM batteries do NOT LOSE WATER. Purge all thoughts of this myth.
Recombinant SEALED VENT CAPS return hydrogen and oxygen as water to the mats. A venting AGM gets hotter than a popcorn fart before it vents. Close to 17 volts at 70F.
Now I can return to UBOOB and continue to search for the big enchilada -- how to turn Pb into Au
