I doubt I'll be buying new batteries anytime soon, but here's perhaps one way of looking at it. The argument is often put forth that batteries are just a commodity item, and who cares if you only get say 5 years out of a set, instead of say 10. Afterall, at $600can for 4 GC2-6v's, that's an increase from $60/year to $120/year for batteries. So, no big deal. But if I can replace those four 6v's with a 200Ah LiFePo; (due to less peukert effect, a flatter voltage curve, and less loss of cycles due to twice the practical SOC range); at a cost of $2400can, and get say 10 years out of them, then that's only an increase from $120/year to $240/year... an extra $20/ month.
CORRECTION... that's a cost of $20/month, but only an extra $10/month.
So, what do I get for that (edit)$10/month? Less weight, more storage area in my ~95 sq. ft. camper, better overall performance, shorter charge times, less maintenance, increased range of operating temperatures... and most importantly perhaps, I get to experience what it's like to live like a fat cat! :)
Oh, and I switched beer brands this past summer, and am saving about $40/ month, so that means I could go LiFePo and increase my solar, without spending a penny more!!!
