Thermal coupling on older Magic Chief Oven

Got a older magic chief oven. Pilot light lights but the oven wont? I'm going to tear apart the thermal coupling today and see if its stuck or something. Has anyone had this problem before?

  • Just tried it nope. O well looks like no oven for me. Thank goodness its my weekend warrior and not anything more just sucks everything in it worked except the oven. So no lasagna for me at the lake.
  • Have you tried it on broil? Often that bypasses the thermostat part for the heater pilot.
  • Yep that's it. So sounds like its broke. I took it out of the oven and of course broke the gas intake that comes out of the couple into the back of the oven. It took me all day to find a 1/8 funnel/compression fitting(a round egg shaped item that fits over the tub and stops leaks) for the thing. Napa has them if anyone can't find one. Older pickups gauges ran of 1/8 copper tubs. Put it all back together and still same thing. I'll take any suggestions. The big pilot light doesn't light so is It a goner or fixable? Thanks.
  • I have an older Magic Chef stove/oven in my rig. It's a 4 burner stove. My oven dial has most of the temp graduations have worn off. I need a new dial but I can't find them.
    I'll have to sniff out Chris's Link to RePco. Any other ideas where I can get a new dial?

    Looks like Chris's link has what I want,Look at the last page on this link;

  • Johnstone doesn't carry appliance parts anymore. You may be able to find some left over stock at a appliance store. These oven safeties came with two different fittings depending on what size tubing you have.

  • Question...

    Has anyone checked out JOHNSTONE SUPPLY to see if any of their stuff can work in case the OEM is obsolete?
  • Don't take it apart- it is *not* a thermocouple, it is a mercury filled safety valve. These older oven used a 2 stage pilot flame- a low "standing" pilot and a larger "heater" pilot. The thermostat does nothing but modulate the flame, and when it calls for heat, the pilot flame should get large enough to completely envelope the bulb on the end of the safety valve capillary tube. Once the pilot flame is large enough, it can still take 15-30 seconds for the valve to open.
