now, we all know that Teflon tape comes in yellow and white. the yellow is for gas lines and the white for plumbing. My question is this, what direction do you put the tape on the pipe, clock wise or ...

This is what you do, pipe dope then tape. You also dope the other fitting as well.
Works great and never had a leak.

But flammable gas cylinders (all I've ever seen) are threaded backwards. The nut to connect the cylinder to a hose will have a notch in it. So the tape goes counterclockwise.
So the tape goes in the direction that won't unravel it when you make the connection.
You NEVER use thread tape on a POL Spud Nut.
