This is what you do, pipe dope then tape. You also dope the other fitting as well.
Works great and never had a leak.

But flammable gas cylinders (all I've ever seen) are threaded backwards. The nut to connect the cylinder to a hose will have a notch in it. So the tape goes counterclockwise.
So the tape goes in the direction that won't unravel it when you make the connection.
You NEVER use thread tape on a POL Spud Nut.
