Tips on a neat finish for caulk?

This seems like a silly question, but how do you get a nice finish when caulking? I always seem to come away feeling like it's a mess.
Any good tools to smooth it out?

  • All good advice above. As mentioned, the real trick is getting the correct amount of caulk on the joint. Spoons work good for rookies. If I had to recaulk all the siding joints on my trailer, I'd be done in less than 1/2 hour. This isn't a tough job.
  • I wipe a dab of hand soap on my finger in lieu of water. It is more slippery and cleans easier. Keep a roll of paper towels handy. Also, just do a few feet of caulk at a time. Some of the eurethane caulks skin over fairly quickly. One it skins over it is hard to smoothen with finger..
  • I use small cap with mineral spirits to dip finger in.

Get tired of licking finger :B
  • You could also do a Google search to see videos of how to do it.
  • Ok, thanks. Probably just need practice. As much as I'd like to have the finished product, I do not look forward to re-caulking all the outer areas. Will probably just do it as needed.
  • Wet finger tip.
I think it does a better job than a credit card or something similar.
  • An old credit card works well for 90° corners and such, otherwise it's just a wet fingertip. Like wrgrs50s stated, the size/angle of the tip can save you a lot of headaches.
  • I find if I use the minimum amount to fill the area to be caulked I can just dampen my finger and smooth it out easily. A lot has to do with how you cut the tip for the size crack your filling.

Some use painters blue tape and smooth it to the tape and then lift the tape for a clean line. That works really well if you have a black window frame and are using white caulk.
