Mex, Link is to a diode.
A capacitor would not help transients on my house equipment as it's not initially connected to the engine or alternator. After starting and then when the chassis battery voltage stabilizes the isolator is engaged to charge the house battery. For solenoid isolators that immediately engage with ignition on a capacitor might be helpful.
