Oh, also if you need a place to stay for the night. Bakersfield River Run RV Park (across from Costco) is newer and very well taken care of. It's a good place to stay right off 99, and is fully paved.

Off 58, Orange Grove RV Park is also nice, older but well taken care of, too. As the name implies, they are in the middle Orange groves with orange trees on their property you can pick fruit from when in season. The blossom smells are great. It has paved roads, but spaces are gravel, so depending on how much rain we get this winter, this might make it a little messier.

There is also another park on 58, that we haven't stayed at that is supposed to be nice also, A Country RV Park. It's a little closer to Bakersfield, but not much.

Thanks for that tip. We may be able to take 99 in Jan.

Just to throw this out there, and it may be too late for the OP, but just avoid I-5 altogether. If you are heading to any point north (except the central coast,) stick to Highway 99. The road is so MUCH better, 3 lanes both directions most of the way, and its only takes about 15-20 minutes longer. But trust me the road is so much smoother and with the 3 lanes, you won't get stuck behind any trucks for miles on end, you won't even notice the extra time!

I-5 has become horribly rutted, pot-holed, and neglected by Caltrans. While 99 has almost completed its expansion and the state is seeking to have named an interstate. So its no longer the forgotten, red-headed, step child to I-5.

But, don't tell anyone! I don't want my secret to get out and ruin my great, less-traffic, smooth alternative! One more thing , there is supposed to be (near Fresno I think) two trees right next to each other, one redwood to the north and a palm tree to the south. This is the exact geographic point between Northern and Southern California! Although I haven't seen it personally.

RV park at the corner of 223 and Union Ave S/W corner. Hwy 99 is west of it, so I would think road noise. 58 west of 99 is a pain anytime, and worse now with construction widening it to 6 lanes out to Calloway drive. Go to 7th Standard for sure. 46 goes thru Wasco, then 2 lane out to the 5.

OK 223 is off the list.

Hwy. 58 to Hwy 99 to Hwy. 46 (about 15 miles north on 99) Go West on Hwy. 46 to I-5

I live in Bakersfield, and know all these routes well, and I would NOT recommend 223 because it goes thru the community of Arvin and other farming areas with significant local traffic, and several stop signs. Nothing like Rosedale Hwy. Further, I am not aware of any RV parks along that route.
Hwy 223 goes west from Hwy 58 and down the mountain to Arvin and the road is reasonably steep grade, probably 6%, and the remaining road all the way to I-5 you have local traffic, especially thru Arvin, all two lane. I would not drive my motor home on the 223 route. There are better options.

Thanks and will try 7th Ave Standard. From the map 58 is the shortest but horrible traffic. 46 is 1.1 mile longer than 7th Ave Standard.

223 is only 1.4 miles longer than 7th Ave Standard so that would also be a possibility. We've stayed at Orange Grove RV Park on 58 just east of Bakersfield which would not be on the 223 route.

This. I've taken 58 west to I-5. The traffic is terrible.

The route I suggested is NOT 58 to I-5. Route 58 west of 99 is Rosedale Hwy, and traffic is HORRIBLE all the way to I-5.
The 7th Standard route I suggested parallels Hwy 58 (Rosedale Hwy) about five miles north.
I would NEVER suggest you travel Hwy 58 west of Hwy 99 because of the congestion and horrible traffic almost any time of the day!
