Ultra Fast Charging Battery Technology

For you battery zealots --> Battery Link
  • It looks interesting. I see the days of fossil fuels coming to and end over the next few decades.

  • "And, they're off and running..."

I wish them success. The world needs to rid itself of Pb (lead). Now, if someone can come up with ambient temperature superconductor material, RV'ing would take on a whole new concept. I'm afraid a 10 Kw genset to take advantage of faster charge time would take the bloom off the rose.

People need to understand lithium technology DEMANDS a certain charge profile, a protocol to take advantage of the technology. Some lithium technology and construction hates lower ambient temperatures.

But every step forward is an advance.

They speak of portable electronics.. I wonder if this technology will be practical in the multi-hundred amp hour at 12 volt range and what the cost will be.
  • Lithium battery-mass thermal problems from what I understand, are the "hot" topic in the industry. A lot of issues have to work themselves out. But the race is on. It's Germany, the US, Japan, China, Indonesia, and India in an all-out race.

The LI batts with those issues aren't sold to the public. The chemistry you're interested in is LiFePo4. MUCH less energy dense than the cobalt oxide LI's in the 787 or the lithium manganate in the Nissan Leaf but still MUCH more energy dense than lead acid. It takes a serious, continuous overcharge to physically damage LiFePo4 (like bulging case damage) and even then they don't explode.
