My 1990 southwind has the new freon from the factory

R12 is still available, albeit at a price. But I'm confused. You say no leaks but the thread says you need new refrigerant.

Can try to see if I can help find a shop in DFW.

Surprised at new freon (134A?) in any 1990 vehicle. Cars sold in USA didn't get it till mid and late 1990's.

My post was worded poorly, I meant no leaks in the RV. It is a 1987. I called a few places today that did conversions but not on RV's. I bought it for a good price knowing it needed a couple of things. Thanks for the offer of help. Bob J.

Bob,

Your Bounder should have a Denso HVAC system, with expansion valve, not a capillary tube. Not much to convert. Just add the two adapter fittings to the ports, change the receiver/dryer, vacuum down and charge with R134A.
You can tell the rookies in the business if they say "Freon". Freon is an EI DuPont trade mark and doesn't describe the chemicals used in refrigerant. The really trained pros will say "R 134A" or "refrigerant 134A".

See if your under-dash HVAC cabinet is marked with its Make/Model. We had an older Class C with "dealer" air and the expansion valve WAS replaced when converted from R12 to R134A. I think you should change it. And be sure it's wrapped in the insulating cork tape called Press Tight. Otherwise a condensate buildup will freeze and tell the valve to cut the refrigerant off.

Not at all uncommon for shops to not want to work on Class A motorhomes. Access is difficult, and often the system was cobbed together with what was available when a specific unit was being built. I can go to another forum and see what I can learn.

Before I do, what are the Chassis Make, Model, Year, and Engine? Please get that info, and tell us as much as you can about the HVAC inside unit as you can find.

It's a 87 with a 454, I suppose that would be a Chevy chassis and it's a 25 ft Bounder. It's still at the seller's until I can find a place to park it. I did find a lot of shops who did not want anything to do with an RV.

I got it at a fair price and the owner was up front about what was not working. I am "mechanically Declined" so I thought I would just try and get a ballpark idea of how bad I was getting taken advantage of.

Call a CG that is close to you. Ask who they use for RV Mobile Repair.

Call them and they will come out to you. You don't have to be in a CG to use the service.

Ask if he is licensed for AC repair. 'Some' states require this for them to add/alter a system for freon etc. They also may find that something else is wrong like maybe just the

ac controls on the dashboard are not working.

I found RV mobile Repair service to be the BEST service for MH's. These guys are great they are more knowledgeable about RV's than any other repair shops.

Less expensive, AND you don't have to schelp your MH and leave it anywhere. I have ALL my service and maintenance done by RV Mobile Repair. My MH has not seen the inside of a repair shop since I bought it.

Regarding an inoperative AC unit, my first move would be to stuff more refigerant in it (but not overfill) and see what happens. Even if the stuff immediately flew out a 1/2 inch pipe, you'll know more quicker and cheaper than a professional inspection. If the AC doesn't revive, THEN I would call a professional and get ready to start writing checks. BIG checks.

Chances are the AC was underpowered on the day it was built and in perfect working order. For this reason I would demand up front "estimates" of the cost involved, not just for an inspection but for the progressive levels of repair that will inevitably be recommended.
