Upgrading my Charge Controller

I am thinking about upgrading my charge controller. I have a cheap 20A controller now with lights and would like to get a charge controller with a read out telling me what my battery voltage is and how many amps of charge my 100 watt panel is charging. I do not want to go overboard and buy a real expensive controller, just a display model.

Any suggestions?

  • My Solar 30 is 0.1V high. Use a little thinner wire, get some voltage drop, and it should be spot on. It will read high if you use a short fat wire setup from the charge controller to the battery.
I paid $31 for mine, delivered to the USA.
  • I looked at that "Solar30" charge controller and I think that is exactly what I was looking for. It does what I want and the price is right.
    Thanks BFL13.

  • Consider a Solar30. Mine was $37 on eBay. Has the readouts plus the Vabs is adjustable. Also has AH if you want that for anything. Vabs is also Float so you have to adjust the voltage going from camping to storage battery maintenance.

Confirm its voltage with your own meter once you adjust Vabs. The Solar30 calibration for that was out a bit, but its amps reading was correct. Mine was high so to get it to stay at 14.8 I set it to 14.3. Another forum member's Solar30 was only 0.1 high ISTR.

Like all controllers it should be mounted with low wire resistance to the battery. This usually means close, so you might have to go out to look at the readouts and change the Vabs instead of doing it inside the rig somewhere miles from the battery bank.
  • Yep, I'm watching this one, too. My charge controller is a bomb, so looking to replace.

  • I'll be following this conversation closely. Thank OP for posing the question! I have a 55 amp load center.
