upgrading power converter
My power converter has apparently bit the dust, lights flickering for past couple of years now no charge to batteries... Anyhoo, we do a lot of dry camping, where we need to daily boost the batteries...

That's not something I have noticed with my PD4655. It will push the amps required to maintain the set voltage, boost or bulk.
It it was tapering the amps early the voltage wouldn't hold the set point, and it does.
I only have a few trips with the ammeter installed, but so far that's what I have noticed.
