My own rule sort of agrees with the battery council international. Flooded LA limit.
50C 122F. This is sort of extreme. If starting out on a 104 degree day (40c) 50c could be reached but I doubt it. This is equalization not bulk charging.
Yes, that VARIAC in the image will work just fine. With the battery charger dial that control knob back to 0 before switching on the VARIAC. When not in use I keep my VARIAC at 0 as well.
Be CERTAIN to use a reliable method of reading 12 volt amperage between the charger and the battery. If you test, calibrate, and periodically verify the ammeter on the charger then that's good enough. If something seems weird check battery voltage right away.
Anything close to a battery under equalization is going to corrode. I smear charger leads with a lot of corrosion sealer. Including metal parts hidden inside the clamps and under the clamp's cute plastic sleeves. Personally I solder the leads to the clamps just after I take the charger home from the store.
