160 amps at Idle? I find that difficult to believe. Each 25 amps the alternator produces consumes ~ 1 engine HP so it is not just a cakewalk for the engine either.
I can easily tell when my batteries are sucking 50 amps and when they are not, by the throttle response.
There can be issues if there is more than one voltage regulator and the positives are combined.
By all means allow a HD alternator to pump some amps into batteries or past them into an inverter but getting the amps expected, whenever desired, is a bit more complicated.
Many People seem to assume a 160 amp alternator makes that it idle speed, and that 160 amps could fully charge a fully depleted 160 AH battery in an hour. If only this were possible.
One is better off peeing in a rainstorm than convincing such people otherwise
