VCR....its maddness

My wife loves to go into Thrift stores when we are in different area's of the Country...I'm not much for it other than a few minutes to look over any electronic stuff they may have. In the past, I'd check out the old VCR tapes which could always be had for 50 cents to a buck a tape.

Make a long story short, after many years of collecting some old VCR tapes...finding a working VCR has become a problem. I have one in the motorhome which I've never used in the 15 plus years I've had it but the big surprise is just how much a VCR cost nowadays. Its tough to come by a player in the Thrift stores too. I know, who cares, but I just found it interesting that VCR's you could have had for pennies on the dollar a few years back, now are at prices they started out at in the very beginning. My thought in buying the tapes was if I became desperate, I'd watch one. (quality sucks, I know)….guess I'll have to start collecting the bit more expensive DVD's....:-)

I guess I see why the Thrift stores have so many VCR tapes available!!!

  • I appreciate all your comments but let say this again....its not like I'm watching my tapes for all of my entertainment. Back in the day, there were people who had thousands of VHS tapes in their collection. I just happened to buy some on the cheap than realized my Home VCR which never saw much use, was not working at all. I will check on Craig's list, thanks for that info.

Only mentioned this due to the cost of new machines nowadays and the availability also. They were the "in thing" way back when!!!

To some ears, maybe, but there could be a bit of nostalgia hype in that too.

My musician ears don't tell me one is 'better' than the other, but just different. I can more easily hear the individual instruments in digital (important to me) which was a real challenge on vinyl because vinyl tends to be muddy. Perhaps some people don't like that clarity, which can be described as 'sterile' or 'not warm.'

I think it comes down to a matter of personal taste, just like the music itself.
  • LP’s are actually making a comeback as the sound quality is much better than CD’s or other digital format. You can buy current music on LP. Not so with movies on VHS. While I agree VHS/VCRs may not be dead as there are millions of tapes out there, they will not make a comeback. We don’t buy anything on CD/VHS/DVD anymore.

Surf YouTube for the vcr flippers and Goodwill flippers (Craigslist hunter is a good one)
and 4head vcrs are a windfall. $40-$50 and up, more, in the box:
$150 and up for VCR DVD combos on EBay.

People harvest Goodwills for all sorts of things.

yep, I much prefer watching my taped movies/etc. on my VCR. If I am watching something and need to watch/tape something else, just pop it out and when you want to finish watching, just poke it back in.
and streaming, yeah sure, if you have unlimited high speed access.

  • My 10 year old vcr does twice as much as my 20 year old and cost about the same
  • vinyl records, 8 track tapes,
floppy disks, audio cassettes VCR's.... gosh, got to move on.

As for DVD's they too are history...
It's all about ,"streaming." At least for the next couple of days.
