Vent Tank

At my fresh water hookup area, I’ve noticed water coming out of the vent tank opening. I have no idea why or what to do. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
  • My initial answer is, do nothing. It's venting and doing it's job. Now I have to ask, When is it venting? How full is the tank at the time? Are you hooked up to city water at the time it is venting?
  • Are you hooked up to a city water connection? If so, do you have a valve you turn to fill the fresh tank? Is it fully shut off? Or the check valve in your pump has not sealed and is allowing water to back feed into the fresh tank. Turning off the city water supply and running the pump a few times may clear it, or there's a check valve kit available for the common RV pumps. An aftermarket check valve can also be installed in the pump line. The last, and most expensive, fix would be to replace the pump, although that's rarely necessary.
  • I am connected to city water and the fresh water tank is supposedly empty.
  • If this occurs when you are not filling the tank with the gravity fill, then I think Dutch gave you the most likely causes. Check your tank fill level monitor for the fresh water tank. That one is usually correct as the sensors don't get crudded-up like the black and grey do. I think you may find it is full. Hope you can get this fixed easily.

  • If I understand correctly, your tank is supposed to be empty and you are not using it. You are connected to city water connection.
The check valve in the pump is malfunctioning. The city water is flowing backwards through the pump and filling the tank.
You can take the head of the pump apart (easy job) and rinse off all the parts. Usually that will fix it.
If not, you need a new pump.

If he has one of the common Shurflo pump models, there are repair kits available at various levels, including a check valve kit, that are much cheaper than replacing the entire pump.
