Verrrrrry Interesting Lithium Salvage

Riddle me this: Are large capacity lithium batteries (such as are in electric vehicles) made up of a whole bunch of little individual cells (about AA size) ... or has lithium battery technology/chemistry advanced to where lithium batteries of low cell-count but large amp hour capacities (as in lead acid golf cart 6V batteries with 3 cells, and as in lead acid group sizes 12V batteries with 6 cells) can be manufactured?

I would hope that nowadays a Tesla's battery pack doesn't have to be made up of hundreds of little tiny cells - with all those interconnects required in order to hook them all together.
