You may already know this, but I'll tell you anyway.
There are a couple of kinds of digital voltmeters, those that use the measured voltage as the power supply, and those that require a separate power supply.
The ones that use the measured voltage to power the meter are usually labeled something like 7vdc to 30vdc and may be called a 2 wire meter.
The ones with a separate power supply have no minimum voltage and may be called a 4 wire meter. When I installed my meters they required an isolated power supply but I couldn't see any reference to this in the adds I looked at on ebay now.
I used the 2 wire meter.
