I'm probably not the best person to ask about bang for the buck as I believe that in nearly all cases, price represents quality. There are tons of Chinese inverters out there and they are not competing in the quality department. If I were to buy under $250 I might consider two, using one for a backup. Sorry to be so negative, but after 18 years of this I've had a bit of experience with cheap electronics. I'm a big wattage user so I work them pretty hard.
I had a Cotek that was not bad, but I burned it up in 4 years. Xantrex is good, and GoPower seems to be reliable. I have an Outback, which weighs more than my generator and will likely be the last inverter I ever buy.
